Scuzzy = Glitchy + Whompy x Dub-Hop for the Soul

Scuzzy (Rafi Benjamin) has been writing songs, producing, and performing for about as long as he can remember. While living in Boston in the late 90's, Scuzzy was a member of Toneburst, a collective of electronic musicians and experimental artists that included DJ C and DJ /rupture. When Scuzzy returned to his hometown of L.A., he formed a live group called Fosforo, that melded his love of good songwriting and lyricism with his electronic music obsessions. More recently, Scuzzy has returned to making solo electronic productions, under his original moniker of Scuzzy, making as he puts it, "Glitchy, Whompy, Dub-hop for the soul."

Scuzzy's take on electronica is not limited to a particular genre, as he explores the meeting points of hip hop, Downtempo, Dubstep, Breaks, and Jungle. Scuzzy's live performances are an important part of his expression, he insists on remixing, glitching, and dubbing tracks out live, even incorporating live vocals and instrumentation when possible.

As far as I'm concerned, it's all psychedelic rave music. Says Scuzzy, I'm interested in anything that moves the body and stretches the mind, as well as the Downtempo stuff that you'd want to chill to at the end of the night. I came out of the live music tradition. Says Scuzzy, my dad would take me to Grateful Dead shows as a kid... so for me it's important for the live experience to be truly live, to have elements of surprise and discovery. A lot of producers want to mix finished tracks, because they want stuff to hit hard over loud sound-systems. I understand why they do it, but like De La Soul put it: "Fuck being hard, Posdnous is complicated!"

Scuzzy continues to produce new tracks and mixes, and has a few collaborations in the works, including ones with Bassobese, Splice, Angel Garcia (formerly of Mezklah), and Knowa Knowone. He is also closely aligned with the Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. Working with them to bring the crazy and the consciousness to down-ass people around the world.

Mixin and matchin the masters to the max with Max Tannone

Max Tannone has a particular talent for the mash-up. I ran across one of his remix projects on the internet. I was really impressed so I tracked him down and asked him a few questions.

Where are you from?:

I am from upstate NY but now live in NYC. I actually lived in NYC a long time ago, moved away, and am now back.

How old are you?:

24.

How long have you been doing what you do?:

About 8 years. I began making really basic DJ style blends - learning how to find the tempo of an acapella and matching it to a beat. After this I began making beats. I was heavily into the Neptunes at the time, and used to read through the forums on their message board. This was around 2002 when like 45% of songs on urban radio were produced by them. Anyway, from here I just kept at it making my own tracks.

Its kind of funny because I wasn't really into doing mash-ups or anything when I made Jaydiohead. I was strictly trying to place original beats with artists and was frustrated with the whole process - so I made it out of fun and sort of became known for it. That being said I try to add a lot of my own elements, rather than just a basic "mash-up".

What made you decide to do these remix projects in the first place?:

I guess just experimentation. I remember listening to "I Might Be Wrong" by Radiohead and thinking that it basically was a hip-hop track - and I went from there. "Wrong Prayer" and "Ignorant Swan" sat for like 9 months before I made the other 8 original Jaydiohead tracks. I definitely didn't think people would be really into it.

My Beastie Boys and Mos Dub projects were both challenges. I'm just trying to find interesting ways to put tunes together, while hopefully adding some of my own touches in the process. All of these projects are like tributes to my musical heroes. I hope that doesn't sound corny.

What's next?:

To be honest, I'm not sure. I have to wait until the idea finds me...!

Do you know Knowa Knowone?

The first time I saw Knowa Knowone it was 9:00 AM in the morning I was at Burning Man I had been up for two days and was still about four miles form camp. Knowa Knowone did such a good job I stayed for the whole set before making the trek back to camp. This is someone you should definitely check out! Banging through the night with the Knight Riderz

Welcome Knight Riderz strait out of Canada these two make a perfect example of what a Multi Genre Bass Music producer is. They have everything drums that bang, melodies that romance, and synths that rip your senses into new dimensions. Knight Riderz have a heavy harmonic flavor all their own. With backgrounds in Reggae, Hip Hop, Metal, and Classical music there is literally no confines or rules to their output. I recommend you keep an eye out for theses two. I have a feeling they will be doing big things!

Multi Genre Breake Beat Culture with FACTISS

FACTISS. A mulit genre bass Dj from France that is driven by break beats. yet, still manages to get a little of everything else in with out sparing any of the bass.
